Google SGE – AI Powered Search Is Finally Here…

Billed as a ‘new way to search’, Google SGE is the latest offering in AI technology which is expected to change the way people search forever. That also means that the way in which businesses are found online is changing too.

With SGE, users will see their usual search results but arranged in a new way to make more out of each search. Generative AI in search is expected to help people:

  • Ask more complex and descriptive questions.
  • Quickly get the main idea of a topic, with links to dig deeper.
  • Start tasks like drafting or creating images right from the search page.
  • Move along smoothly by following up with questions or trying out recommended next steps.

The use of AI has grown exponentially over the past 2 years – with the dawn and growth of ChatGPT, AI is becoming a mainstay for most businesses and their marketing efforts. But AI in marketing isn’t necessarily a ‘new’ thing. Google Ads has been utilising machine-learning techniques for optimisations for years.

Google Gemini

Google SGE is made possible by Google’s ‘Gemini’ model as mentioned in Google’s latest announcement on the subject:

“This is all made possible by a new Gemini model customised for Google Search. It brings together Gemini’s advanced capabilities — including multi-step reasoning, planning and multimodality — with our best-in-class Search systems.”

Google Gemini is a multimodal AI developed by Google and is considered the first AI model to outperform human experts.

Google has gone on the record, stating that their Gemini model is ‘much more powerful than ChatGPT’ and can ‘perform a greater variety of tasks in a better way’.

Google SGE Search Results for SEO

May 2024.

What does this mean for your business?

There’s no denying that Google SGE will impact businesses that rely on their visibility and traffic through search engines. The AI overviews will occupy a substantial amount of the SERP (Search Engine Results Page) with data from ZipTie suggesting that these overviews could actually take up to 80% of space across vertical viewing devices.

Not only that but under the SGE ranking system, only 47% of the ‘traditional’ search results are expected to appear.

“SGE operates on a completely different level compared to traditional search. If you aim to be featured in Google SGE, you’ll need to develop a distinct strategy tailored to this new environment. It’s a whole new game.”

Optimising for Google SGE

How do you optimise for something as technologically advanced as Google SGE – when essentially, you’re up against Google’s vast database on billions of sites, resources and data for any given topic?

There’s no doubt that this doesn’t pose a challenge for SEO professionals and content creators in general – but early consideration of the following areas could provide a potential for increasing visibility in search results.

Question and Answer

Structure your content in an informative, question and answer style. With Google SGE relying on prompts similar to ChatGPT, users’ queries could be more direct – and optimising content in a Q&A format could increase your chances of being shown or cited by Google’s AI models.

Don’t Neglect Technical SEO

Ensure your site’s technical SEO is at its best so that Google crawlers can access and render all your site’s content. Google has already mentioned recently, as part of their March Core Update, that Core Web Vitals are an important factor in ranking – ensuring optimal speed and performance could only do good things for your site.

Get Featured

Quora and especially Reddit are frequently cited in Google’s AI overviews according to some recent studies. Utilise these platforms to answer questions authoritatively, as this again could help to increase visibility within SGE.

Scope The Landscape

Identify the most common phrases and keywords in your industry that trigger AI overviews and look to optimise early to get a jump on the competition.

Ultimately, there’s no definitive answer as of yet, but there’s no doubt that companies have to adapt for an AI-generated future of Search – and the sooner the better!
